Students are expected to read outside of school daily for 30 minutes or more. I can’t stress enough how important reading is. As Dr. Seuss said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Paper homework, when assigned, will be due back the next day, unless otherwise indicated. Homework on a daily basis in fifth grade should take about 50 minutes, including reading time. If your child is struggling with homework, please send in a note or e-mail me at l.geraghty@hwschools.net to let me know. Homework is meant to be a review/practice of skills learned in class. I encourage students to also get outside and play, enjoy new experiences, play board games, bake, or garden with family members, and practice their skills in different ways by spending time with family and friends.
Can we read more than 30 minutes?
I love to read!
Of course! Reading is fun and good for your brain. Read as much as you want. I love to read. Just make sure you get a good night’s sleep, as well! Lights out when mom and dad say. 🙂

Landon
I love to read, too! What are you reading right now Landon? I’m looking forward to reading groups, too. What types of books are you interested in?
The book I’m reading is Indian and the Cupboard. It’s not my favorite but I’m gonna finish it. The type of books I like are the Harry Potter series. I like reading about wizards, wands, and magic. Do you have any magic suggestions?
Have you read The Lightning Thief or other books about the character Percy Jackson? They include mythology and get rave reviews, though the description on Amazon says they’re good for kids between the ages of 10 and 14. You could give one a try and see if you like it. I’m sure the library would have it at school.
I am going to get a series of the Percy Jackson books. Thank you for the advice.
Landon
You’re welcome! I hope you enjoy them.
when are we going to have reading groups.
Once I finish reading with each of you, I will put together reading groups and we will get started. 🙂
Hi ms.geraghty I was wondering if I could move up a level on razkids because I read a level o book and I thought I was really fluent
Hi, Adison. I’m glad to hear you’re using Raz-Kids and practicing your fluency! That’s great that you’re making progress! I’ve assigned you a “flight check” for the next level. Try it out. Be sure to have a quiet space and let others know when you’re doing the assignment so you won’t be interrupted. Be sure to do a detailed retelling of the story when you’re done (including beginning, middle, end, character names, important events, etc.). Do your best on the quiz, as well. Good luck! Keep reading! I love to read. 🙂

Ixl gave me math problems that went into the millions.
Was it suposed to do that?
What skill were you practicing? Was it place value? If so, it could be that you did so well that it gave you a challenge. Were you in the third-grade section? Sometimes it’s easy to click on a different grade level by mistake.
